Although we often think of a patient consult as a sales tool, it’s also a very valuable part of the treatment process. A patient that’s comfortable and at ease is more relaxed and more cooperative (both overtly and subconsciously), which can enhance clinical results.

So when I teach about consults, I recommend a technique we call “LOVE.”
Listen. Put the focus on the patient’s communication. Let the patient speak, and you’ll have most of the information you need for clinical decisions.
Observe. Watch your patient’s body language, which can tell you as much as what the patient speaks. Is the patient nervous? Hesitant? Excited? Adjust your communications to put the patient at ease.
Validate. Repeat what the patient has told you about appearance objectives, and then validate that you have the skill and resources to deliver.
Establish. With what you’ve learned through communicating with the patient, establish a treatment plan, and set appointments.

You’ve now accomplished the primary goal of the consult (booking the appointment), but you’ve also built a solid foundation for a relationship that can last for years.
